Tutyr is used by high school students, so we keep this short and say what we actually do. If something here isn't clear, ask us.

What we collect

• Who you are: your name, your school, and your grade level.
• Your homework: the text, files, and photos of assignments you give Tutyr.
• Your tutoring conversations: the back-and-forth between you and the tutor.
• Basic app data: when the compute daemon ran and for how long, so we can credit your contribution.

What the compute daemon does

Tutyr installs a background process — we call it the compute daemon. It keeps track of the hours your computer is available between 10pm and 6am. Contributing that spare capacity is what pays for the free tutoring.

• It registers your computer with Tutyr's coordination server, sends a check-in every few minutes while the app is open, and counts the hours you contribute between 10pm and 6am so you get credit for them.
• It reports how many CPU cores and how much memory you've offered — not what's on your machine or what you're doing with it.
• Overnight is not optional. The 10pm-6am contribution is the exchange for free tutoring, so there is no switch to turn it off inside the app. If you don't want to contribute, uninstall Tutyr — that stops it.
• Daytime is optional and off by default. You can choose to also contribute during the day for extra tokens, and you can turn that back off whenever you like from the Compute tab.
• It does not read your files, your browser, or anything else on your computer.

What's coming: the contributed capacity is intended to run Monero mining, a cryptocurrency, which is how Tutyr will fund free tutoring. That mining is not running in the current version — right now the daemon only schedules and measures your contribution. We're telling you now so the arrangement is clear before it turns on, and we'll update this page and notify you in the app before it does.

How we use your information

• To coach you through your homework — that's the main thing.
• To improve the tutoring system. Homework and conversations are used to make Tutyr better at teaching, including checking its answers against real teacher grades.
• To track how much compute you've contributed, so you get credit for it.

What we don't do

We do not sell student data. Not to advertisers, not to data brokers, not to anybody. We don't show ads. Your homework is not a product we sell.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account at any time, and that deletes your data with it — your profile, your homework, and your tutoring conversations. Ask us in the app and we'll remove it.

Students under 18

Tutyr is built for high school students. If you're under 18, a parent or guardian should know you're using it and be OK with the compute daemon running overnight. Parents can contact us to review or delete their child's data.
